As you can probably guess, many of the jobs described in Jobs in Paradise are highly sought after and competition to get them is keen. Thus, your best chances of landing a position lie in sending out as many applications as possible and in being politely persistent with follow-up phone calls and letters.
The number of applications you should send out is a personal decision and will vary
according to your level of experience, your
availability, and your willingness to commit for a fairly long term of employment. Another
factor in determining how many applications to send is what position you are seeking. If
you insist on applying only for "glamour positions," be prepared for lots of
rejections before you land a job. However, if you are willing to take any position the
employer might offer, you'll find a job much more quickly.
Finally, some resort areas are overwhelmed with applications while others are starving
for potential employees. The shotgun approach to applying for a job means sending out a
number of applications at once, at least fifteen. However; those fifteen applications
should be spread over employers in different regions. For example, if you decide you want
to work at a ski resort,
you should apply to ski areas in several geographic areas at once (for example California,
Colorado, and Vermont). Additionally, you
might consider requesting your dream position from some of the
employers while stating a willingness to accept an alternate position.
