ADVENTURE CONNECTION, INC.
(Coloma, California)
Seasonal (Spring and Summer)
Adventure Connection was created by a dedicated group of river enthusiasts who had spent years working as river guides, managers, and booking agents for some of California largest outfitters in California's Mother Lode Gold Rush area.
SPECIFICS: Adventure Connection employs forty-five staff members and
usually hires about ten new employees each season. The company offers an annual whitewater
river guide school each spring (generally the week before Easter) and hires new guides
among its best students. The course costs approximately $750. No figures are available on
the percentage of students who are offered
jobs each year, although Nate Rangel, owner of Adventure Connection, stresses that his
company seeks to "hire as many of the top students as possible We also train guides
for many other outfitters." Positions are available for whitewater guides
(prior experience or training required), kitchen supervisor, assistant kitchen supervisor,
and shuttle drivers (Class I or II license required and drivers must be twenty-one or
older). Pay ranges from $50 to $110 per day plus tips, meals, and free campsites. Seasonal
positions are available from March or April through September. All applications must
be submitted by April 1.
INSIDER TIPS: The company hires the top students from its and whitewater
school for guide positions. A river trip with Adventure Connection is viewed as a
"cooperative adventure, where friends and strangers alike join together in a singular
journey of discovery, sharing, responsibilities, resources, and one another's
company."
PERKS: As With most river outfitters, trip guides receive generous tips,
free meals and camping facilities, and a chance to work in great outdoors.
